• Lymphangiogram, which uses a contrast dye injected into the feet to highlight the lymphatic system . The dye
will stay within the pelvic and abdominal lymph nodes for many months or years, during which the disease can
be followed by simple x-rays of the abdomen.
• Bone x-rays and/or bone scan if there are tender bony areas.
• After injection of the isotope gallium, scanning may reveal "hot spots" indicating areas of HD.
Endoscopy and Biopsy
• Bone marrow biopsy to look for the presence of Hodgkin's disease.
• Biopsy of an enlarged lymph node.
• Formerly, surgical exploration of the abdomen (laparotomy) with removal of the spleen (splenectomy) was
used to evaluate any hidden disease that could influence the choice of treatment. Nowadays this technique is
seldom necessary and usually proper treatment can be planned without it.
